Taxonomy

Osmia coloradensis Cresson, 1878: 105 [♀].

     Lectotype ♀, desginated by Cresson (1916: 115). USA, Colorado, by Ridings and Morrison [ANSP no 2513].

Osmia hypochrysea Cockerell, 1906: 449 [♀]. Synonymy by Cockerell (1928: 120), as a subspecies of Osmia coloradensis Cresson, 1878; synonymy by Sandhouse (1939: 18).

     Holotype ♀. USA, Colorado, Florissant, 12 July 1906, by S.A. Rohwer [CAS no. 15671].

Osmia hypochrysea Rohweri Cockerell, 1907: 366 [♀]. Synonymy by Sandhouse (1939: 18).

     Holotype ♀. USA, Colorado, Boulder, May 1906, by S.A. Rohwer [CAS no. 15672].

Osmia pasadenae Cockerell, 1910: 122 [♂]. Synonymy by Sandhouse (1939: 18).

     Holotype ♂. USA, California, Pasadena, 2 April 1909, by F. Grinnell, Jr. [USNM no. 27844].

 

Taxonomic Notes: Though Michener (1936: 26) reportedly recognized and described the male, Sandhouse (1939: 19) indicated that his treatment was not detailed enough to associate it with certainty.

Biology: Cripps and Rust (1989) indiacted that this species was a Asteraceae specialist. Tepidino et al. (2022) indicated that this species is parsivoltine, with populations containing individuals that will winter for one or two years. It nests in pre-existing cavities, and will accept trapnests (Tepidino et al. 2022).
