Melecta (Melecta) pacifica fulvida Cresson, 1879

Properties

Scientific Name: Melecta (Melecta) pacifica fulvida Cresson, 1879

Common Name: Melecta pacifica fulvida

Taxonomy

Melecta pacifica var. fulvida Cresson, 1879a: 204 [♀]. Synonymy of M. pacifica Cresson by Hurd and Linsley (1951: 128, as a valid subspecies).

Lectotype [designated by Cresson 1916: 119]. USA, Nevada, by Morrison [ANSP no. 2289].

Bombomelecta semifulva Cockerell, 1921: 212 [♂]. Synonymy of Melecta pacifica fulvida Cresson by Hurd (1979: 2070).

Holotype . USA, Colorado, Boulder, 17 May 1920, by E.R. Becker [CAS no. 4673].

Taxonomic Notes: Though Linsley (1938: 160; 1939a: 440) followed Cresson (1879a: 204) in considering M. fulvida subspecific with M. pacifica, Viereck (1903b: 181), Michener (1948: 17) and later Linsley (1951e: 1242) treated it (and M. atlantica Linsley) as a valid species; Viereck (1903b) incorrectly indicated that the species was originally described as M. thoracica var. fulvida Cresson (presumably following the classification of Dalla Torre (1896: 318) who considered it a subspecies of M. thoracica Cresson), though he too considered that it was likely a variety of M. pacifica. In a subsequent treatment of Californian species, Hurd and Linsley (1951: 128) reinstated it as a subspecies of M. separata which has been followed by subsequent authors (Krombein 1958: 258; Hurd 1979: 2070) until the present.

Linsley (1939a: 441, 1951: 1242) treated M. semifulva (Cockerell), known from the type specimen, as a valid species though indicated it was similar to M. pacifica. This opinion was shared by Hurd and Linsley (1951: 127) who also examined the type material but did not difinativily place it into synonymy. Though it was not associated with any subspecies of M. pacifica recognized by Krombein (1958: 258), it was later treated as a synonym of M. pacifica fulvida by Hurd (1979: 2070).
