Hylaeus fedorica (Cockerell, 1909)

Properties

Scientific Name: Hylaeus fedorica (Cockerell, 1909)

Common Name: Fedor Masked Bee

Taxonomy

Prosopis digitatafedorica Cockerell, 1909: 27 [♂].

Holotype ♂. USA, Texas, Lee County, Fedor, 17 March 1909, b Birkmann [AMNH].

Prosopis grossicornis Swenk and Cockerell, 1910: 67 [♂]. Synonymy by Snelling (1970: 20).

Holotype ♂. USA, Nebraska, Lincoln, 14 May 1901, by L. Bruner, on Tamarix gallica [UNSM].

Taxonomic Notes: The ♀ was first described by Snelling (1970: 20).

The synonymy listed above was first suspected by Metz (1911: 118).

Snelling (1970: 20) incorrectly indicated that Cockerell (1909: 27) described P. digitata fedorica Cockerell as a variety (i.e., “var.”) though it is clearly denoted in the original work as a subspecies.

Distribution in Canada: Metz 1911 [Cana[da].]; Gibbs et al. 2023 [MB].

Though Metz (1911: 118) was the first to record this species from Canada (as H. grossicornis Swenk and Cockerell), no additional location information was provided; Snelling (1970: 20) and Romankova (2007: 141) did not include any Canadian locations in their mentions of this species. Thus, Gibbs et al. (2023: 16) are the first to confirm this species in Canada.
