Properties

Scientific Name: Halictus confusus arapahonum Cockerell, 1906

Common Name: Arapaho Metallic-Furrow Bee

Taxonomy

Halictus arapahonum Cockerell, 1906: 316 [♀].

Holotype ♀. USA, Colorado, Boulder, 4 June 1905, by W.P. Cockerell [USNM no. 27990].

Halictus provancheri nearcticus Cockerell, 1911: 661 (not Halictus nearcticus Vachal, 1904).

Halictus (Chloralictus) olivarius Sandhouse, 1924: 10 [♀]. Synonymy of H. confusus Smith, 1853 by Sandhouse (1924: 34); of H. confusus arapahonum Cockerell, 1906 by Michener (1951: 1105).

Holotype ♀. USA, Colorado, Jumbo Reservoir, 9 miles east of Crook, 12 August 1921, by G.A. Sandhouse [USNM no. 26399].

Taxonomic notes: Sandhouse (1941: 34) was the first to place Halictus arapahonum Cockerell, 1906 into synonymy under H. confusus Smith, 1853; Michener (1951: 1105) agreed, though recognized it as a valid subspecies.

Cockerell (1911: 661) compared dusky winged populations of H. provancheri Dalla Torre, 1896 [= H. confusus Smith, s. str.] from the Atlantic coast to specimens from Illinois, the latter with clearer wings with a light amber stigma which he felt should be called H. provancheri nearcticus (Vachal); Michener (1951: 1055) felt these specimens were consistent with H. confusus arapahonum, not H. nearcticus Vachal, 1904 [= H. confusus Smith, s. str.].

DNA Barcode Index Number (BIN): BOLD:ABX6542

This BIN includes specimens from western North American, including YT, BC, AB, MB, and is presumed to correspond with this subspecies.

Distribution in Canada: Michener 1951 [BC]; Hurd 1979 [BC]; Ebmer 1988b [BC].
