Panurgus halictulus Cresson, 1878: 63 [♂]. Preoccupied, not Dufourea halictulus Nylander, 1852]. Synonymy by Robertson (1897: 340); synonymy by Cockerell (1922: 3), as Halictoides marginatus halictulus (Cresson, 1878); synonymy by Michener (1951: 1132), as Dufourea marginata halictella Michener, 1951.

Panurgus autumnalis Robertson, 1895: 121 [♀]. Synonymy by Robertson (1897: 340); synonymy of Dufourea marginata marginata (Cresson, 1878) by Michener (1951: 1132).

Dufourea (Halictoides) marginata halictella Michener, 1951, replacement name for P. halictulus Cresson, 1878.


Taxonomic notes: Cockerell (1897: 289) was the first place Panurgus marginatus Cresson, 1878 in Halictoides Nylander, 1848. Cockerell (1897: 150) commented on the identify of Panurgus halictulus Cresson, 1878, and the “Panurgus” of North America in general, feeling that it was not properly placed within the Andrenidae. He also echoed this opinion in another work (Cockerell 1897: 289), indicating that at least six of the Panurgus of North American belonged with Halictoides. His subsequent treatments of Halictoides (Cockerell 1916; Cockerell 1922) indicated that over a dozen species were incorrectly placed, in the former work implying an affinity to Halictus (Halictidae).

Dufourea marginata halictella Michener, 1951 was considered a valid subspecies by Cockerell (1922: 3, as Halictoides marginatus halictulus (Cresson, 1878)) based on the darker wind veins and dusky wing membranes, though he indicated that both forms intergrade in Boulder, Colorado.

In the review of type materials at INHS, Webb (1980: 108) incorrectly placed Panurgus autumnalis Robertsonwithin the Andrenidae, though by that time it had been correctly placed in Dufourea.

Biology: Cockerell (1897: 150) commented on the long-slender tongue of Panurgus marginatus Cresson, 1878 (as Panurgus halictulus Cresson, 1878), indicating that it was an adaptation for obtaining nectar form the disc-florets of Helianthus Linnaeus (Asteraceae), on which it is oligolectic (Moldenke 1979; Lincoln 1981; Dumesh and Sheffield 2012).
